Alfred, Hugh and Harvey-Sleaze Merchants

In a October 2000, interview with Fox News’ James Rosen, conservative pioneer, William F. Buckley, who wrote columns in Playboy Magazine for nearly four decades, was asked why he wrote for that magazine, quipped, “It was the fastest way to communicate with my seventeen year old son.” What compelled Buckley to write for Hefner’s magazine, that he publicly found so abhorrent? Buckley’s explanation that the best writers in the world published in the magazine fell woefully short of the “moral smell test” in appealing to others who opposed everything the Playboy Philosophy advocated. His February, 1974, column about court rulings on obscenity, Buckley assailed “the thoughtlessness of the Playboy philosophy, and the individualization of ethics, which of course the sexual revolution has been the driving wedge.” read more

With Predictability

by Mike Pyatt

Four years ago this columnist wrote about a Cheyenne church that bucked the national trend, voting not to renew ScoutTroop102’s charter, in opposition to the Boy Scouts of America’s executive decision to admit openly homosexuals into their ranks. Two years later, permitting the same as Scout Masters. The column asked, in the last line, “Is it worth deliberately placing a youngster in a heightened position of risk? Why not girls? Call it ‘Scouting America!’ What do you think?” That prediction didn’t require a prophet or seer, merely reading the sign posts to see this coming-BSA inviting girls, and allowing them by 2019, to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Not everyone’s embracing the move. Girl Scouts America issued a blistering rebuke to the BSA’s decision to allow girls into their ranks. The GSA’s executives railed against their counterparts, in a statement to ABC, “The Boy Scouts’ house is on fire,” they attacked, “Instead of addressing systematic issues concerning sexual assault, financial mismanagement and deficient programming, BSA’s senior management wants to add an accelerant to the house fire by recruiting girls.” read more

Country Above Self

by Mike Pyatt

Our military branches boast a motto or creed, officially or otherwise, designed to convey the character of the men and women who serve in their respective uniforms. The Navy boast one that bears repeating-Non sibs sed partriae. ”Not for self, but county.” In our current culture, that glorifies self-serving, flies in the face of the Navy’s motto. Unless one’s a recluse, who could ignore this “bending a knee” during the National Anthem that has divided many since Colin Kaepernick, who occupies a multi-million dollar, secure, gated fortress, refused to stand because he believed the flag represented police oppression of minorities. Pundits claim disputing the issue only perpetuates its life. That’s why critics quickly blamed President Trump for reigniting the rift, claiming it was waning, with his tweet about SOB’s disrespecting the American Flag. read more

Mugged By the Judiciary

by Mike Pyatt

A Michigan mother faces incarceration for not vaccinating her nine-year old son. Rebecca Bredow says she’d rather face jail time than vaccinate her son. “I would rather sit behind bars standing up for what I believe in, than giving in to something I strongly don’t believe in,” she commented in an ABC news interview. This isn’t the first legal battle over parental rights and the courts. Some states “grant” religious, medical and personal exemptions. However, this battle started when her ex-husband took her to court to settle the matter over their son. She apparently changed her mind about vaccinations after doing research, and asked for a waiver. The Oakland County Court sided with her ex, who’s demanding the child be vaccinated. Is this a liberty issue? Or another judiciary mugging? She has but a few days to choose; to fully vaccinate her son, or the hoosegow? When did the courts find the hubris to assail our liberties? To whom do children belong? Did it begin before the abdication of Congress? read more
